Kratom Growing FAQ

Short answers to the questions growers ask most, each linked to the full guide for detail and sources.

Getting Started

What is the kratom tree?

Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is an evergreen tree in the coffee family (Rubiaceae), native to Southeast Asia. It grows naturally in warm, humid lowland forests and along rivers.

How kratom grows

Is kratom easy to grow?

It is moderately difficult. Established trees are vigorous in warm, humid conditions, but seeds lose viability quickly and young plants are sensitive to cold, dry air and overwatering.

Is it easy to grow kratom?

Should a beginner start from seed or from a live plant?

A rooted live plant is the most forgiving start. Seeds are inexpensive but have low and variable germination rates, and cuttings need very high humidity to root.

Buying kratom plants and seeds

How long does it take to grow a kratom tree?

Seeds germinate in roughly 1–4 weeks, a seedling becomes a sturdy sapling in about 6–12 months, and a tree typically needs two to three years before light pruning of leaves is reasonable.

Can kratom be grown indoors?

Yes. Most growers outside the tropics keep kratom in containers indoors or move it inside for winter, using grow lights, a humidifier and steady warmth.

Seeds & Cuttings

Why do kratom seeds fail so often?

Kratom seeds are tiny and short-lived. Freshness matters more than anything else; older seed often fails to germinate even under ideal warmth and humidity.

Growing kratom from seed

Should kratom seeds be buried?

No. Seeds are usually surface-sown on a fine, moist mix and kept under a humidity dome at around 75–85°F (24–29°C).

How long do kratom cuttings take to root?

Roughly 3–8 weeks under near-saturated humidity, warmth and gentle light. A 2025 study found longer daily light (about 14 hours) improved rooting compared with 10 hours.

How to clone kratom from cuttings

Is rooting hormone necessary for kratom cuttings?

It is optional. Research has shown that auxins such as IBA and NAA can increase root number, but cuttings can root without them when humidity is kept high.

Care & Climate

How many hours of light does kratom need?

Indoors, about 12–16 hours a day. Seedlings and cuttings tend to benefit from the longer end of that range; established trees do well with 12–14 hours.

What USDA zone can kratom grow in outdoors?

Year-round outdoor growing is realistic in USDA zones 10–11 (and the warmer zones of Hawaii and Puerto Rico). Zone 9b is marginal; colder zones need containers that come indoors.

What temperature is too cold for kratom?

Growth slows below about 65°F (18°C), damage becomes likely near 50°F (10°C), and frost is usually fatal.

Overwintering kratom

What soil pH does kratom prefer?

Grower guidance points to a slightly acidic range of about 5.5–6.5 in a rich, moisture-holding mix that still drains well.

How humid should it be for kratom?

Young plants do best around 60–80% relative humidity; established trees prefer 50% or higher. A digital hygrometer placed next to the plant gives an accurate reading.

Watering and humidity

Why are kratom leaves turning brown or dropping?

The most common causes are cold drafts, dry air, sudden changes in light and overwatering. Check conditions before reaching for fertilizer or pesticides.

How big does a kratom tree get?

In the wild it often exceeds 15 m (50 ft). In containers, most growers keep trees around 4–10 ft with regular pruning.

Harvest & Maintenance

When can leaves be picked from a home-grown tree?

Most growers wait until the tree is well established, often year two or three, and then remove only a small share of mature leaves at a time so the tree keeps growing.

When and how to harvest leaves

How often should kratom be repotted?

Repot when roots circle the pot or growth stalls, moving up only a few inches in diameter each time. Many container trees end up in 15–25 gallon pots.

Repotting and pruning

Does kratom need fertilizer?

Light, regular feeding during active growth helps container trees. Strong doses can burn roots, so gentle balanced fertilizers are the usual choice.

How to fertilize kratom

Is it legal to grow kratom in the US?

Kratom is not federally controlled, but several states ban it. As of October 1, 2026, those states are Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Tennessee, Vermont, Wisconsin. Some cities and counties have their own rules. This is not legal advice.

Where does kratom grow naturally?

It is native to Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia (including Borneo and Sumatra), Myanmar, Papua New Guinea and the Philippines, mostly in humid lowland and riverside forests.

What does “Green Borneo” mean?

It is a trade name that combines a vein color with a region. It describes how a product is marketed, not a separate botanical species or variety.
